Riaan is the longest serving television news anchor in South Africa. Rated in an independent opinion poll as the second most credible South African after former president Nelson Mandela, Riaan believes that credibility in broadcasting is earned through hard work and dedication only.
Born in Johannesburg on 5 October 1945, he graduated at the University of Stellenbosch. After a broadcasting career in radio since 1965, he switched to television when this medium was introduced to South Africa in 1975, and hes still there!
Although completely bilingual, Riaan is especially respected and admired for his exemplary usage of the Afrikaans language and his clear enunciation as broadcaster.
